A Magistrate Court in Owerri has granted bail on each of the defendants to an aide of former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha and 13 others with 5m bond bail.
B.U Adikaibe, the magistrate who ruled on the bail request made for the release of the defendants, also insisted that a traditional state ruler or a member of his cabinet should stand as a guarantee.
Justice Adikaibe claimed that Eddy Onyema, the decision to grant the defendant the bail application by the prosecutor, is due to the fact that the charges against the defendants are not capital criminal offences and are all bailable offenses even though the prosecution attorney had previously objected to the bail.
The 14 individuals were arraigned before the court by the State Police Commissioner, Nasiru Mohammed, on a six-count charge.
The charges are concerned with conspiracy, disobedience to lawful order, knowingly and unlawfully damaging the official seal of the Imo State Government, conduct capable of causing a breach of peace, unlawful possession of weapons and defamatory action against the Governor of Imo State on social media with the purpose of harming the image of the state government and Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Although both counsels refused remarks, the decision was addressed to journalists outside the court by a law professor present at the court.
The case was adjourned until March 18th.
